Thinking about Spatial Computing

چکیده
We propose to include the perspective of spatial computing in interdisciplinary courses on spatial thinking. Specifically, we recommend developing and applying a set of spatial lenses through which learners of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) get to see geographic space and choose spatial computations. These lenses are based on the core concepts of spatial information proposed by the authors. While there is intentionally nothing new about the concepts per se, their explicit use as lenses through which to see geographic information and select GIS operations is innovative. Thus, we propose a lightning talk on core concepts of spatial information as a form of spatial thinking to support learning

Teaching Spatial Thinking: Perspectives from Cognitive Psychology
Cognitive psychology primarily focuses on understanding of how humans represent and process spatial information. Cognitive psychology approaches to spatial thinking consider how we think about space (i.e., thinking in space, and thinking about space) and how we use space to think (i.e., thinking with space). This paper outlines topics to be covered on each of these topics in a course on spatial...
متن کاملComputational thinking and thinking about computing
Computational thinking will influence everyone in every field of endeavour. This vision poses a new educational challenge for our society, especially for our children. In thinking about computing, we need to be attuned to the three drivers of our field: science, technology and society. Accelerating technological advances and monumental societal demands force us to revisit the most basic scienti...
متن کاملThinking spatially in the science classroom
Much scientific thinking is spatial in nature, and even non-spatial information is often communicated using maps, diagrams, graphs, analogies and other forms of spatial communication. Students’ spatial skills are correlated with their success in learning science, both concurrently and predictively. Given that spatial skills are malleable, can spatial thinking be used to improve science educatio...
متن کاملIntegrating Cyber-Physical Research and Thinking in College Education
Cyber-physical system (CPS) research has been a recent yet strongly supported area by NSF. CPS is any computing system which has significant and tight interdependence among its cyber part (i.e., computing functionality), its physical part and the environment (i.e., behavior). A large issue with teaching CPS (and even researching about them) is that they break out from current disciplinary conve...
متن کاملThe roles of body and mind in abstract thought.
How are people able to think about things they have never seen or touched? We demonstrate that abstract knowledge can be built analogically from more experience-based knowledge. People's understanding of the abstract domain of time, for example, is so intimately dependent on the more experience-based domain of space that when people make an air journey or wait in a lunch line, they also unwitti...
